Wedding Hair Timeline: When to Book Your Bridal Hair Stylist

Your wedding day hairstyle is one of the most important beauty decisions you'll make. Getting the timing right – from researching styles to booking your stylist and scheduling your trial – makes all the difference between a relaxed, confident preparation and a last-minute scramble. Here's a complete timeline to guide you through the process.

12 Months Before: Start Your Research

Even if your wedding is a year away, now is a great time to start collecting inspiration. Create a folder or Pinterest board with hairstyles you love. Think about the vibe of your wedding – is it formal and elegant, relaxed and bohemian, or something in between? Your hair should complement the overall aesthetic.

Also consider your dress neckline and any accessories you're planning. A plunging back might call for an updo; a high neckline might look better with hair down or in loose waves.

9–12 Months Before: Book Your Bridal Hair Stylist

Popular bridal hair stylists in Buckinghamshire and Aylesbury book up quickly – especially for Saturday weddings during the peak summer season (May to September). I'd strongly recommend securing your stylist at least nine months in advance if your wedding falls on a popular date.

When you get in touch, have your wedding date, rough location and approximate bridal party size ready. This helps your stylist assess whether the date is feasible and how long the morning will need.

See my wedding hair services page for details on what I offer for brides and bridal parties.

6 Months Before: Book Your Hair Trial

A hair trial is essential. This is a full practice run of your wedding day style, carried out well in advance so there's time to make adjustments if needed. I recommend scheduling your trial around six months before the wedding – close enough that your hair is in the condition it will be on the day, but with enough time to refine the look.

Bring your veil, headpiece or any accessories to the trial. If you have a photo of your dress neckline, bring that too. The more information your stylist has, the better they can tailor the style to you.

3–4 Months Before: Consider a Pre-Wedding Haircut or Colour

If you're planning to have a trim, colour treatment or grey blending before the wedding, schedule it three to four months out. This gives the colour time to settle and tone naturally, and lets you assess how it looks before the big day.

Avoid any dramatic colour changes in the weeks leading up to your wedding – stick to familiar, trusted treatments you know suit you.

6–8 Weeks Before: Final Trim and Tidy

A neat trim six to eight weeks before the wedding keeps the ends fresh without risking any unwanted surprises closer to the date. If you're wearing your hair up, this is less critical – but for styles where the ends are visible, a final tidy makes a real difference.

Morning of the Wedding: Allow Plenty of Time

Plan your morning schedule carefully. As a rough guide, allow 45–60 minutes per person for blow-dries and styling, and up to 90 minutes for complex updos or braided styles. If you have bridesmaids getting their hair done too, work backwards from your ceremony time and add a comfortable buffer.

I recommend always building in at least 30 minutes of additional time to the schedule – weddings rarely run perfectly to plan, and having that buffer means nobody feels rushed.
