Balayage vs Highlights: Which Is Right for You?
If you're thinking about lightening your hair and have been researching options, you've probably come across both balayage and highlights as popular choices. Both are fantastic techniques, but they work very differently and suit different hair types, desired results and maintenance preferences. As a mobile hairdresser offering colour services in Aylesbury and Buckinghamshire, here's my guide to help you choose.
What Are Traditional Foil Highlights?
Traditional highlights involve weaving or sectioning small pieces of hair and wrapping them in foil with a lightener or colour applied to each piece. The foil creates heat and isolation, allowing the lightener to work without affecting the surrounding hair.
The result is typically a more uniform, all-over lightened effect with highlights running from root to tip. This gives a brighter, more consistent lightening throughout the hair and is very effective for creating a noticeable colour change.
What Is Balayage?
Balayage is a freehand technique where the lightener is painted directly onto the surface of the hair without foils. The word "balayage" comes from the French for "to sweep" – which describes exactly how the technique is applied. The lightener is swept or painted onto sections of hair, concentrating on the mid-lengths and ends where sunlight would naturally lighten hair.
The result is a softer, more gradual gradient of colour – typically darker at the roots and lighter towards the ends. It looks incredibly natural and sun-kissed.
Key Differences
- Finish: Highlights give a brighter, more uniform result. Balayage gives a softer, more natural gradient.
- Maintenance: Highlights typically need retouching every 6–8 weeks as the roots grow out noticeably. Balayage can often last 10–14 weeks before a refresh is needed, as the grow-out is barely visible.
- Processing time: Foil highlights typically process faster. Balayage can take longer to apply as it's a freehand technique requiring more artistic placement.
- Best for: Highlights tend to work well for those wanting maximum lift and brightness. Balayage is ideal for those wanting a lower-maintenance, more natural-looking result.
Which Should You Choose?
If you want a striking, bright colour change with defined lighter pieces running through your hair – highlights are likely the better choice. If you want something more natural-looking, gradual and lower maintenance – balayage is probably for you.
Many clients actually benefit from a combination of both techniques: foils at the front for brightness and face-framing, and balayage through the lengths for a natural blend. The right approach really depends on your starting colour, hair type and desired result.
